We have a saying in skiing - 'March is for racing April is for resting' - I know that sounds very vague so for more information check out the
Late Season Training entry this week.
The concept behind this saying is that now is the time to reach our true fitness potential if we have not yet done so this season. Training goals for March should focus on fine tuning our high-end anaerobic capacity not logging big hours or controlled L3 training.
It can be common for elite level skiers to compete in 10+ races during the month of March which doesn't leave much time for anything other than recovery distance workouts, some light speeds, and traveling to races. I can recall some seasons when I didn't do a single interval session in March just tried to race at least two times per week.
This kind of race schedule is not necessarily realistic for citizen or masters racers.... there simply aren't that many races available (at least in North America) but we can still cater our daily training to reflect this type of 'race now, rest later' type of approach. This week we recommend some sharpening intervals early in the week as well as another L4 double pole focused workout on the weekend. (weekly races can replace any recommended interval sessions).
- When intensity gets high remember to keep the easy distance days controlled and L1. We recommend untiring some one pole skiing to work on technique
- Cut out distance training hours if necessary, try to feel good for the interval or race days
